During slavery, the black body repeatedly experienced abuse, violation, and degradation. The dehumanization of black people birthed a culture that is still alive today. As we celebrate Juneteenth, it is important to pay homage to the black body and our humanity. The body is a person and that person is free.

“In recognizing the humanity of our fellow beings, we pay ourselves the highest tribute.”

—Thurgood Marshall
